2010 Steamboat Pentathlon Rules & Regulations
MANDATORY PRE-RACE MEETING & RACE PACKET PICK UP
Friday, March 19, 2010 at Olympian Hall at 5:30 p.m. (To reach Olympian Hall from downtown Steamboat Springs, cross the Yampa River on 5th Street, proceed right on Howelsen Parkway after crossing the river, Olympian Hall in located on the second floor of Howelsen Hill Lodge).
MANDATORY RACE DAY CHECK IN
All individuals competitors and team captains MUST check in between 9:15am-9:45am at the Information Tent in the Transition Area on race day.
ALPINE SKI (.46 Mile Standard Course, .33 Mile Short Course)
- Racers must stay on designated course. Previous participants should review course map and note slight changes to Standard Course from previous years.
- Helmets are mandatory on the apline course. Failure to comply will result in a 5 minute penalty.
- You may wear the same helmet that you wear on the bike leg of the race.
- Any type of footwear (i.e. tennis shoes, snowshoes, ski boots, etc.) can be worn on the uphill portion of this leg.
- Ski poles are allowed. All gear left at top will be brought back down to the Information Tent in the Transition Area.
- Your skis should be left at the top of the run in the assigned Standard or Short Course area at the end of practice.
- Any contact other than incidental will result in disqualification.
- Alpine skis, telemark skis, nordic skis and snowboards will be allowed.
SNOWSHOE (2.5 Miles Standard Course, 1.5 Miles Short Course)
- Racers must follow the exact course as marked.
- Snowshoes must remain on at all times during this portion of the race, expect for mechanical failure.
- Ski poles are allowed.
- A water station will be available at the Short Course turnaround point.
CROSS COUNTRY SKI (4 Miles Standard Course, 2.25 Miles Short Course)
- Racers must follow exact course as marked. Previous participants should review course map and note slight course changes to Standard Course from previous years.
- Classic or skate style skiing is allowed.
- Passing must be donw in a safe fashion and not to impede the progress of the person being over taken.
MOUNTAIN BIKE (12 Miles Standard Course, 7.4 Miles Short Course)
- Riders must come to a complete stop with a foot touch in designated circle at 5th Street intersection on return portion of course. Failure to comply will result in a 5 minute penalty.
- Racers must follow exact course as marked.
- Only 26 x 1.9" or larger tires are allowed. Road and cross bikes are not allowed.
- Helmets are required on the biking course. Failure to comply with result in a 5 minute penalty.
- Seperate bike number tags are required and will be distributed in the participants packets and must be affixed by the participant to the bike frame.
- Standard Course participants must obey all course marshal traffic signals as you exit (turning left) off of Willow Park Road. Marshal may request that you come to a complete stop. Participants who disregard marshals' orders may receive a time penalty. (Short Course participants will ride 3.7 miles to turnaround located staffed by marshals._
- Bikers must travel with traffic and in single file.
- Drafting will result in disqualification.
- Riders must heed all directions from course marshals and obey all traffic signs if designated to do so by race officals.
RUN (5 Miles Standard Course, 2 Miles Short Course)
- Racers must follow exact course as marked. Previous participants should review course map and note slight course changes from previous years.)
- Two aid stations will be available - one at the railroad tracks (Short Course Turn Around) and one at the final Standard Course Turn Around of the run course.
- Use caution on paved trail as icy and wet conditions may exist.
INDIVIDUAL TRANSITION AREA
- Each racer will have a designated area for all gear. Large plastic trash bags or personal duffel bags may be used. Both nordic and alpine skis should be stuck in the snow next to your gear. Bikes will be located at your individual desingated area. (Suggestion: Bring a lawn chair or pad to sit on to change gear)
- Personal support staff for individual racers will NOT be allowed in the transition area. Race volunteers will not be allowed to assist with gear. Personal gear may be transported by racers only.
- Racers are responsible for placing all of their personal gear in their pre-designated changing area in the transition area.
- Please mark ALL gear with your bib number and full name
TEAM TRANSITION AREA
- Each team will have a designated are for all their gear. Large plastic bags or personal duffel bags may be used. Both nordic and alpine skis should be stuck in the snow next to your gear. Bikes will also be located at your designated team area. (Suggestion: Bring a lawn chair or pad to sit on to change gear)
- Team members must tag off to the next racer in the designated team transition circle. As a team member approaches the team transition circle the next racer should be inside the circle to receive the tag.
- All teams - no matter how many participants - must utilize the team transition circle.
- Bikes are not allowed in the team transition circle... team tags should be made in the circle first and then the biker can retrieve their bike.
EQUIPMENT INFORMATION
- Put your name, address and phone # on all of your equipment.
- Pick up all equipment immediately after finishing the race. Race organizers are not responsible for lost or stolen equipment.
RACE PACKETS (Pick up at 5:30PM, Friday, March 19th at MANDATORY RACER CHECK IN AT HOWELSEN HILL LODGE)
- Bibs or Tag #'s - One for each team member. Must be worn on the outer-most layer at all times on your front when competing. Individual Standard Course Racers will have stretch bibs which must be turned in at the Finish area when race is completed.
- Bike Tag Number - Matching the individual or team number. Must be attached to top tube of bike with twist ties provided.
- Coupons for Race Lunch and passes for the Old Town Hot Springs Pool with hot tubs and showers.

FIRST AID (Located inside Howelsen Hill Lodge)
National Ski Patrol will be on hand to render any first aid you might need. It is suggested that you write down any medical conditions or medications that you are currently taking on the back of your bib #.

You are encouraged to carry your own food and water.
POST-RACE MEAL & AWARDS
Food and beverages will be available at NOON in Olympian Hall in the Lodge. The awards ceremony will begin promptly at 1pm
COURSE CUTOFF
All participants must remain on pace to complete the race in 3 1/2 hours. Any racer who has not reached the long course turnaround on the run stage by 3 hours will recieve an automatic finsh time of 4 hours. Any athlete wishing to proceed after missing the cutoff time will be on their own for aid and traffic control and not subject to race insurance or liability. While completing the event is of paramount importance to all athletes, we ask that you heed this rule out of concern for your fellow competitors, race staff, public servants and members of the community who generously welcome this event to their roads and trails. If you choose to continue on the course, you are proceeding at your own risk.
REFUNDS
No individual or team will receive a refund of entry fees once the March 15, 2010 deadline has passed.
BLOOD RULE
If blood is noticable on a participant it should be brought to the attention of the Race Director so that the participant can be removed from the competition. Once the bleeding has stopped and wound area is covered, participant may return to the race. If there is blood showing on the uniform/clothing, the participant must change that part of the uniform/clothing or cover it with tape, sweatshirt, pants, or a similar item.
